The
Johnny Ace Series
Johnny Ace
is a DJ who has music show/controversial phone-in on a Liverpoool
radio station. He also owns flats in the city and in his 'spare
time' he runs 'Ace Investigations'. The books chronicle his adventures
as a private eye on the mean streets of Liverpool not to mention
the his tangled love-life. Although certain reviewers refer to him
as 'Liverpool's answer to Morse', Johnny Ace is not a policeman.
He is more like Lovejoy or Terry of 'Minder'. But the true star
of the novels is the city of Liverpool and the area of Merseyside.
Johnny supports Everton at Goodison Park, attends concerts at the
Philharmonic Hall, eats at Lucy in the Sky Cafe in Cavern Walks,
drinks at the Atlantic on the Dock Road and comments on the state
of Southport's seafront. At various times the action moves to Ormskirk,
North Wales, Chester, Preston,Manchester and
the Isle of Man.

The
Det. Chief Inspector Glass Series.
Det. Chief
Inspector Glass is an irascible copper of the old school who doesn't
like the new breed of politically correct college policemen whom
he regards as little more than social workers in uniform. Despite
the advances in forensic science and DNA testing, Glass prefers
to rely on people like 'Eddie the Nose' to help solve his cases.
Really he's not unlike TV's Inspector Frost, except Glass was invented
in 1978, well before Frost came along.

Journal
of a Coffin Dodger
Nirvana Books (Paperback) 1989
Ulverscroft (Largeprint) 1999
ISIS Audio Book 2004.
The
reading by Christopher Scott is brilliant.
('The
hilarious adventures of an 84 year old man who wants to become a
bachelor playboy'). Described by Punch as 'one of the funniest books
ever'.
I published the 'Coffin Dodger' myself after 26 rejections from
publishers who said the diary form had already been done by Sue
Townsend with Adrian Mole. (Tell that to Helen Fielding). It's been
serialized on BBC radio and there is a Czech edition out but when
I wrote 2 full length scripts for a propposed BBC TV sitcom, they
said it was 'too sexist, ageist and racist'. Praise indeed! Amazingly,
it is still selling today and many booksellers say their customers
tell them it is the funniest book they have ever read. It would
be great on TV but who would play The Coffin Dodger? How about Albert
Finney or Tom Courtney?

Lives of John Lennon by Albert Goldman Bantam Press
1989
Back in the Eighties, I conducted 192 interviews
with members of John Lennons friends and family in Britain and on
the Continent and took many photographs for Goldman's million selling
book.
The background of my Johnny Ace books owes a lot to my Merseybeat
years in Liverpool in the Sixties as an agent and DJ.
My article on the Goldman-Lennon Letters was published
in the October 2004 issue of Record Collector
