I've hardly a wildly successful recording career but 'Boys on the Dole' did get to No.7 in the new wave charts in 1979. Not bad for someone who sings like I do. However, here is a complete discography of my 45rpm singles.
Here comes summer
(Rox, 1975)
The old Jerry Keller hit. I wrote a new shuffle arrangement and recorded it in London's Morgan Studios backed by Sue & Sunny (who had a hit with 'Doctor's Order's') & Tony Burrows who appeared on TOTP with White Plains, The Pipkins and Edison Lighthouse in the same week. Here Comes Summer was accepted by Warner Bros then EMI released Dave Clark Five's version the day before I signed the contract thus ruining my best chance of stardom!!!
Boys on the Dole
By Neville Wanker & the Punters
(Lightning Records, 1979)
Rated by Music Week as 'more relevant than Sham 69'. Features an amazing lead guitar solo played by American folk-rock star Tim Rose, of 'Morning Dew' fame. Incredibly, with no personal appearences by 'Neville', this reached No.7 on the New Wave charts in 1979. Now a rare and valuable collectors item, the track appeared on a1999 compilation entitled 'Cool Punk' and on Anagram's 'Lightning Records' compilation in 2000..

Go funk yourself.
By Juanita Goochafrita & The orchard St. Bagal Band (E.M.I.)

In real life, the singer was New York actress Barbara Rosenblat backed by session men. The beat was the same as The Gap Band's 'Oops Upside Your Head' and the track was a Radio Luxembourg 'Record of the week'. 'Jaunita' made a camera appearence at the DJ of the year show but, despite being on a major label, the record never charted. One of the first 'Rap' records too!

Hot California Nights
by Barry Womersley (Da Doo Ron Ron 1982)

Barry was in Southport's most succesful 60's band, R & B Inc. and, later, in Inner Sleeve who appeared 3 times as 'Opportunity Knocks' winners. His singing on these three country songs of mine would have blown Don Williams off the stage. The title track received lots of airplay but country never sells in Britain. Maybe if they'd got into Nashville radio, Kenny Rogers or someone might have covered them. Ah well!

You're my wife

Written for my wife, Sue. Had a lot of airplay at the time on request shows.

Lonely in the country (for a city boy like me)

Bobby Bare style country song.

Middle of the House
by Ronnie and The Raiders (Da Doo Ron Ron)
1984
Once a hit for Alma Cogan, The Raiders were mostly members of Shakin' Stevens band and the sax solos and pianos are stunning. I wrote the 'B' side 'Eileen, Eileen' for an old girlfriend hoping Shaky might cover it. He didn't.

Donkey Dick - Judge Dread

I wrote it for Southport's legendary rock 'n' roller Pete James. aka Eddie Vincent, and was thrilled when it was covered by rude reggae hitmaker Judge Dread, now deceased, as an album track. The royalties paid my bus fare to the studio. It has just appeared on a new Judge Dread compilation CD called 24 Big Ones on the Trojan label.

Galactic Girl

Written in the New Romantic / Electronic period! Early 1980's and sung here by The Womersley Brothers. Great dance number, I still think it could be a hit with the right production.

Nicola

Written when my daughter was small ('Oh Karen ' for my other daughter, has yet to be recorded). Sung by The Womersley Brothers again, it's a Four Seasons pastiche, not unlike Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl' which came out later. Released in 2003 as a single on Mayfield Records.

Girl on her own

A feminist song. Although this is a country version, I envisaged it more as a torch song for someone like Elkie Brooks.

Best say it sooner

I couldn't sound like Jim Reeves if you gave me a million pounds and that's the voice needed for this song. I wrote it after loads of people on Billy Butler's show said these were the feelings they most wanted to put into the song, ie. tell someone you love NOW rather than wait till it's too late.

River of time

The original demo and original title of 'Seas of time' that PJ Proby recorded.

Third finger left hand
Originally a Martha and the Vandella Tamla hit & the most requested record on my Disco in the 1970's. I had the idea of updating it & copied the backing from Maxine Nghtingales 'Right back where I started from'. Only a rough demo.

CD SINGLE

P.J.PROBY-NEW COUNTRY

My main aim in making the CD was to get the songs heard and recorded by other artists. So far it hasn't worked but it has been played recently on Radio Two so there's till time.

Hot California Nights

By PJ Proby (Da Doo Ron Ron)

I thiink PJ Proby is the greatest singer of the era. I was very proud when he agreed to record what I think is my best composition back in 1989. He did more a country rock version although he was not in the best of health (!) at the session
Seas of Time
I loved the lyrics I wrote for 'Seas of Time' which I could see being sung by a male/female duo.

American trilogy

Proby's favourite song and the highlight of his stage act.
PJ Proby is now 65, lives in Evesham and occasionally tours the country as part of a sixties package show.
